This easy basic hummus recipe comes together in less than five minutes! Use it to snack on veggies and chips and get some extra protein and healthy oils into your diet. This hummus recipe has no tahini, so you don’t have to worry about finding this specialty ingredient.
My youngest daughter and I are a little obsessed with hummus. I used to think hummus was totally BLAH, but then I started making my own and experimenting with different flavor combos. Now instead of being boring, hummus is exciting!
A major ingredient in most hummus is tahini, which is basically like peanut butter, but made out of sesame seeds. My oldest daughter seems to be allergic to this, so I started making hummus without it.
In this post, you’ll get a recipe for basic hummus with no tahini, but also suggestions for flavors that you may never have tried. These flavors will expand your hummus vision, and no longer will it be considered, boring or blah.
If you’ve always wanted to love hummus but just can’t, things are about to change for you. Welcome to the new world of hummus, my friends!

- 1 (15.5 oz.) can garbanzo beans, unsalted
Instructions for making Basic Hummus

Different flavors for Hummus
Here’s where things get fun! You can spice up your hummus (literally) by adding spices!
My rule of thumb is to add 1 teaspoon of whatever spice (or spice mix) you like to your hummus.
When using spice mixes, be careful about salt. If you’re using a spice mix that already contains salt, you’ll want to reduce the amount of kosher salt you add to your hummus.
Here are some spices and spice mixes to try:
Curry powder (my favorite!)
Italian Spice
Chipotle (You can add the powder spice, or add a chipotle pepper to the blender)
Pepperoncini (add a pepperoncini pepper to the blender)
Roasted red pepper (add 1/4 cup roasted red peppers to the blender)
Chili powder
Rosemary and garlic (add 1 teaspoon rosemary and 1 teaspoon fresh garlic)
Lemon and dill (add 1 teaspoon dry dill, or 1 tablespoon fresh dill and 1 teaspoon freshly grated lemon rind)
Creole seasoning
Jalapeno (add a jalapeno to the blender)
Sriracha
Sautéed onions (add 1/4 cup sautéed onions that have been nicely caramelized)
Black pepper and balsamic vinegar (add 1 teaspoon freshly-cracked black pepper and 1 Tablespoon balsamic vinegar)
Sun-dried tomatoes (replace the olive oil with oil from the sun-dried tomatoes jar, and add 1/4 cup of sun-dried tomatoes)
Hummus is very much a “to taste” kind of food. After you’ve added your spices, if you want more, just add more! It’s so easy to customize, and so forgiving.
So how about you? What flavors can you think of? Leave me a comment!
