Decluttering doesn’t have to be hard or overwhelming when you realize that you only have three choices for everything you own.

In my Declutter This — Home Organization for Everyone Facebook Group, I did a Virtual Decluttering Session to help one of our members with her “junk corner.”
Do you have a junk corner, too? You know–the place where you put things that you don’t know what to do with?
It’s been said that clutter is just delayed decisions, and that’s absolutely true. We set things down because we can’t decide in the moment what to do with them or where to put them. Thus, the junk corner is born, and it grows and grows until it becomes overwhelming and unmanageable.
But not any more! Today, I’m giving you the key to decluttering and kicking those feelings of overwhelm to the curb!
It’s easy when you realize that you only have three choices for everything you own:
- You can keep the item.
- You can throw the item out.
- You can donate the item. (Technically, you could also sell some things, but I’m putting “selling” and “donating” in the same category.
Here’s what you do.
Get three laundry baskets, boxes, or large bins and take them with you to your junk corner (or any area of your house you’re trying to declutter).
Pick up each item one by one and decide which of the baskets/bins it goes into. Will you keep it, trash it, or donate it?
After you’re done with the pile, throw away the trash, set the “donate” basket/bin aside (or put it straight in your car so you can drop it off the next time you’re out) and then carry the basket of “keep” items with you to put the items where they belong.
That’s it! No long flow charts with 14 questions you have to ask yourself. No more brain overload and decision fatigue. There are just three choices!
Try this out and then let me know how it goes! And if you want to watch the video where I go into more detail, join the Declutter This Facebook Group!
