Transform Your Home, Transform Your Life–Week 23–Hobbies

February 1, 2016 by Melissa Howell Leave a Comment

How many hobbies have you had over the course of your life? Is your home cluttered up with the leftovers of your previous interests? Time to decide what brings you joy and get rid of the rest!

TODAY’S FREEBIE

Hobbies. We all have them. They could be scrapbooking, sewing, painting, knitting, or cake decorating. Hobbies can also include sports and all their attendant equipment. (Did you also know that “Cigar Smoking” and “Pigeon Racing” are hobbies? You learn something new every day! Here is a huge list of hobbies if you are interested.)

I describe a hobby as anything you do for fun or relaxation that you don’t get paid for. Chances are, you have several hobbies, and thinking about going through everything might send you into a panic. I confess that I have felt that way a little bit myself. However, even though this challenge is  “one week challenge,” I think it might be wise to identify all your hobbies and only deal with one hobby a week, unless you feel like you can do more.

I have gone through so many hobbies, from making Matsumoto Balls (which I learned how to make when I was living in Matsumoto, Japan) to silk ribbon embroidery to pencil drawing to Donna Dewberry painting (I painted everything in the house with flowers–even trash cans!) to scrapbooking and beyond. Luckily, I have gotten rid of a lot of things related to these hobbies over the years, but I really need to go through the rest and see what brings me joy.

Your assignments for this week are:

  1. Identify all your hobbies and discard or donate everything that no longer brings you joy.
  2. Decide once and for all where to store all remaining items related to your hobbies.

  • If the scope of your hobbies is too massive (like having enough fabric to fill an entire JoAnn store) you really may need to split this challenge into several weeks. If you do this, YOU MUST SCHEDULE time to address your remaining hobbies, or you will get stuck on this challenge and not be able to proceed. We are so near the end! Don’t give up now!

This challenge is based on the KonMari method found in the book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up. If you are just joining us, be sure to start at the beginning! It’s very important to go in order! You can also visit my Transform Your Home, Transform Your Life page for all the previous posts in this series. Don’t feel like you have to catch up if you are just finding this challenge now! Just make sure to start doing the weekly challenges from the beginning, and you will be fine!
