Taco Pizza Recipe

Add this Taco Pizza Recipe with homemade crust to your menu! You get all four food groups in one fabulous meal!

What could be better than pizza AND salad together? Soft and salty and melty mix with fresh and bright and crunchy in this dinner that is sure to please!

How to Make Taco Pizza with Homemade Pizza Crust

I have always made my own homemade pizza crust. (I use it for my Jalapeno Popper Pizza, which is AMAZING). It’s actually really easy, and I always have the ingredients on hand.

All you need are water, yeast, sugar, salt, olive oil, and flour.

Once you mix up the dough and let it rise, it’s time to roll it out on a pizza stone or baking sheet.

I always spread some olive oil on my pizza stone and then sprinkle some cornmeal before rolling out my dough.

Then I roll my dough to the edges and prick it with a fork.

Since I use a baking stone and it takes way longer to heat up than a metal pan, I usually bake my dough before adding the toppings. I put it in a 350-degree F. oven for 10-15 minutes.

If you are using a metal pan, you don’t need to pre-bake your crust, although you can partially bake it if you wish. (I’d suggest about 5-10 minutes in a 350-degree F. oven).

Here’s what my dough looks like after baking.

Once you’ve gotten the dough out of the oven (if you decide to pre-cook it), you need to turn your oven up/on to 475-degrees F.

Now it’s time to add the toppings.

Instead of pizza sauce, you are going to use refried beans for the base. Just spread on as much or as little as you like.

Next, add your meat and cheese. I use hamburger meat cooked with spices. (You can just cook hamburger meat with taco seasoning, or with salsa, or make super yummy Sweet and Spicy Taco Meat).

For cheese, use a mix of cheddar and mozzarella.

Once your oven is heated to 475-degrees F., put the pizza in for 9-10 minutes, until the cheese is bubbly and starts browning. Stay close and watch carefully!

You’re almost done! All that’s left is to add the “salad” ingredients to the top. I like lettuce, tomato, red onion, cilantro, and sour cream. Avocados and salsa would also be great toppings.

Now just slice and serve!

Ingredients

For the Crust

  • 1 cup warm water
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 3 Tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 3 cups flour

For the Pizza Toppings

  • 1 cup refried beans
  • 1/2 pound ground beef, cooked
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup fresh diced tomatoes
  • 2 cups shredded lettuce
  • 1/4 cup sliced or diced red onion

Instructions

For the Crust

Add the sugar and yeast to the warm water and let proof for 5-10 minutes. It should look frothy.

Add the olive oil and the salt.
Add 2 cups of the flour and mix well.
Add 1/2 cup more of the flour and mix well.
Put the other 1/2 cup of flour on a large cutting board and knead into the dough. (You can also make the dough in a stand mixer, making sure to switch to the dough hook after mixing in the first two cups of flour)
Cover and let rise in a bowl until doubled, about 45 minutes. If you are in a pinch for time, you can also just roll it out and use it right away.
Once dough is risen, punch down.
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F. if planning to pre-bake the dough.
Lightly cover your pizza stone or pan with olive oil and then sprinkle corn flour over it. This will help the dough not to stick.
Put all of the dough on the pizza stone and roll to the edges. If you roll it slightly over the edges, you can take the overlapping dough and lift it back onto the pan, making a higher crust edge.
If desired, bake the crust for 10 minutes in a 350 degree oven.

For the Toppings

Preheat your oven to 475 degrees F.

Spread the refried beans on top of the crust almost to the edges.

Sprinkle on the cooked ground beef, followed by the cheddar and mozzarella cheeses.

Bake for 9-10 minutes, watching the top carefully. When the cheese is bubbly and starts to brown, remove the pizza from the oven.

Top with fresh tomatoes, shredded lettuce, and onions.

Can also top with sour cream, salsa, and any other ingredients desired.

Notes

When cooking the ground beef, feel free to flavor it with taco seasoning or other spices or salsa.
