Hello! So glad you’re here! In this week’s “Declutter This” series, I’m teaching you what to do with your kids’ backpacks and coats.
TODAY’S FREEBIE
If your kids are anything like mine, they come through the door from school and drop their backpacks and coats on the floor.
Kelly, a member of my Declutter This — Home Organization for Everyone Facebook Group, has this same issue. But her kitchen nook (which is used more as an office space) is where everything gets dumped.
Backpacks and jackets just get dropped on the bench. You can see that there are hooks for jackets, but not everyone’s jacket will fit–thus, the mess.
Here’s the advice I gave her, and that I would give to you as well.
Number 1
Get each child a special “box” for their backpack and coat. I recommend these sturdy fabric boxes from Ikea.
I love them and use them in my own home. They are great because:
- They are big enough and deep enough to keep items from spilling out and falling into other people’s boxes or the floor. They can hold a large backpack and a big puffy coat.
- Because they are fabric, you can let your kids personalize them with their name or other artwork using fabric pens.
- They only cost $4.00! I’ve seen other similar boxes at Target that cost $12.00 a piece, so these are a steal!
- They come in several different colors, so each child could have their own color.
I use them in my home to contain our shoes, hats and gloves for winter, umbrellas, extra bags, etc.
Number 2
Pick a spot where these boxes “live.” For Kelly, she could put the boxes directly on the benches of her kitchen nook, or underneath the benches if they’ll fit.
At my house, most of our boxes are in our coat closet. But my youngest daughter keeps hers by the door to the back deck, because that’s the door she entered after getting home from school. She finds it to be the most convenient place for her, so we let her keep her box there.
The point is, everyone needs their own special box, and it needs to stay in the same place.
