Shopping should be fun! Learn the simple four-step formula that will transform your shopping experience!
I almost dumped my husband because he was such a slow shopper. We were wandering through the mall one day when we were dating. Suddenly, a small store dedicated entirely to leather jackets caught his eye. Two hours later, he had finally decided to buy one, and I had decided that I couldn’t possibly be with a man who took that long to shop. Then I told myself that dumping an amazing man just because he was a slow shopper was dumb. I’m glad I listened to myself. I married that man, and it was the best decision I ever made.
After being married for a while, I discovered why he was such a slow shopper. He’s what I call a “Museum Shopper.” When he goes into a store, he likes to casually wander up and down all the aisles, carefully consider whether or not we could need each item, and then take another ten minutes to decide to put it into the cart. On the other hand, I am a “Hunter Shopper.” I know what I want before I go in. Once I get in, I want to find it, kill it, bag it, and get out.
However, my style of shopping has often been thwarted when looking for clothes. Often, I wasn’t sure of what I wanted when I went in the store, and it always took me too long to decide what I liked. There were too many options to begin with, and I had to try on a bunch of things to know whether or not I would look good in them. Then once I got the clothes home, I would second-guess whether or not I actually liked them. More often than not, they just languished in my closet or drawers, and I felt bad for wasting my money.
But no more. Now I can shop for clothes with lightning speed and come home with things I love and will wear again and again.
What’s the secret?
It’s a program called Dressing Your Truth. In this program, you receive color cards you can take with you shopping. On the back of the cards are other guidelines for design line, texture, fabrication, and pattern. There are also guidelines for which colors and types of jewelry you should wear. (The cards shown here are quite large. You also get wallet-sized ones that will easily fit in your purse).
All of this is based on your Energy Type. According to Dressing Your Truth, there are four Energy Types, and each one has its own unique way of dressing that will bring out the most of your inner beauty. (There is a separate card for each of the Energy Types).
The first thing you have to do is discover your Energy Type. You are one of the following Types:
I have done many posts to help you identify which Type you are. My most recent post has videos where I discuss each of the Types and show you examples of famous people of each Type. It’s called The Life-Changing Secret to Unlocking Your True Beauty. And if you want to have some fun, check out Which Disney Princess Shares Your Energy Type?
There is even a free course you can take from Dressing Your Truth that helps you figure out your Energy Type. Click here to sign up for it.
Now that I know my Type and have my Style Guide, this is how I shop:
1. I walk into a store, go to my desired section and immediately start looking for the colors on my card. I am so familiar with my colors now that I never have to look at my card. But it’s a great guide when you are first starting out. Now the goal of the card is not to match colors exactly. What you do is hold it up to the garment and see if it harmonizes and blends well with the colors. Here are a couple of examples:
This first card is for the Energy Type of one of my daughters. You can see how beautifully it lays on top of the garments and blends with them.
Now my Energy Type is completely different from my daughter’s. So here is what my card looks like paired with two of my tops:
I can scan racks of clothing really quickly to identify which colors are mine. That narrows my choices down to 1/4 of everything in the store. (This is not 100% accurate, because certain colors are more prevalent during certain seasons).
2. To continue, I pull the item out and quickly look at it. I can know immediately whether or not I like it. (I think we call can tell right away what we like and what we don’t like). Now I take this a step further. I don’t have to just like it. I have to love it. It needs to be gasp-worthy. (Unless it’s a plain t-shirt, which it’s kind of hard to get excited about). I should be saying things like, “Oh my gosh, that is so cute!” Or “Wow, that is gorgeous.”
3. I think about the other elements for my Type. These are design line, texture, fabrication, and pattern. Here’s where I could reference the back of my card if needed. I see if the item has all (or most) of the elements for my Type.
4. I try on the items. If I try them on and think, “meh,” then I obviously put them back, even if I thought they were really cute. But if I try something on and feel fantastic, that is the winner. If I try something on and can’t decide if I love it or not, then that is a sign to put it back. If I don’t know at the store, I won’t know at home, and it will never get worn.
Now that I know all my colors and elements of style, I can “find it, kill it, bag it, and get out” in record time! Plus, it makes shopping a lot more fun. You might worry about having too many guidelines or “restrictions.” Nothing is “restricted.” You will soon discover that the things particular to your Energy Type really do make you look and feel amazing, and you will begin to trust in the process. Shopping is so much more fun when you are confident you can come home with things you love, and when you know you haven’t wasted your time and money.
The Dressing Your Truth Course is FREE! It is video course where you will learn about all the elements of style in great detail. They also show makeovers with befores and afters. I just love those!
