Dressing Your Truth can change your life! See how it brings out the incredible beauty of this amazing Type 4 woman!
This is my friend Briana. She is a Type 4 in the Dressing Your Truth system. Dressing Your Truth is a program that teaches you how to bring out the most of your natural beauty by aligning what you put on your body with your true nature. That means that a bubbly person would wear lighter, more animated clothing. And a more serious person (like Briana) would wear bold, structured clothing. (Please visit my More Than a Makeover section for descriptions of all four Types of Beauty, to see more befores and afters, and to read about my own experience with Dressing Your Truth).
Dressing Your Truth teaches you about the colors, textures, design lines, patterns, and cuts of clothing that look best on you. It also teaches you which hairstyles and makeup really bring out the most of your true beauty!
But honestly, even more importantly, it teaches you about yourself–to love and accept yourself for your true gifts and talents. Things you thought were weaknesses can actually be strengths! I found out which Type I was by reading the book, It’s Just My Nature! by Carol Tuttle, the creator of Dressing Your Truth. In it, she teaches you about the four Types of Energy, their characteristics and gifts, as well as their challenges. She also teaches how we need ALL of the Types to have a harmonious world!
Knowing my Type and the Types of others has made me a much more compassionate, understanding person. And isn’t that what we all want? To understand and love people (particularly our family members)? If we can love and accept others and ourselves, and look AMAZING while doing it, I’m all in!
I interviewed Briana about her experience being a Type 4. For a little background, Type 4s are classified as “Bold and Striking.” They are often serious, thoughtful, private, and refined. (For a greater description of Type 4s, please read the post “Are You a Type 4 Woman?” For the complete picture, I HIGHLY recommend getting the book, It’s Just My Nature! by Carol Tuttle. You can also take this free online course to find out what your Energy Type is).
As you read about Briana, see if you can relate to the things she says. If so, you might be a Type 4!
Me: How did you find out you were a Type 4?
Briana: You showed me a list of the characteristics of each of the four Types. I identified the most with the Type 4 attributes.
Me: What do you like about being Type 4?
Briana: I love that I can wear black! It’s my favorite color and I have gravitated toward it all my life. It’s interesting that I naturally was attracted to it before even knowing about Dressing Your Truth. I feel confident in my clothes, even though I’m not in the shape I would like to be. When I wear Type 4 clothes, my posture naturally improves. I hold my neck and head higher. Even the way I walk is different. When I go shopping for clothes, I can shop so quickly and save money! I just look for the colors I know are perfect for me, and that eliminates half of all the other clothes. When I get home, I know I won’t say, “Now why did I like this?” And it won’t end up in the back of my closet, never getting worn.
All my life, friends and family have told me I was a strong person. I used to think I was overly analytical, but I now realize I am discerning and perceptive. I like to sit back, watch, and analyze situations. I can read people’s emotions, and I feel like that is one of my gifts. I also feel more comfortable being direct with people when the situation warrants it. When I was younger, people told me I was bossy and that I was trying to control the situation. I didn’t think that was true. I just have a “take charge” nature! But knowing that I am a Type 4, I know now how to select better words when expressing myself.
Most of the time, I’m a “no fluff, all business” kind of gal. But I do have a silly sense of humor and can be quite goofy. I can do some crazy impersonations! I’ve done them my whole life, but they are typically reserved for those closest to me. My parents actually enrolled me in acting classes, but I didn’t follow through. I wish I would have! Who knows? Maybe someday I will.
Me: What do you like least about being Type 4?
Briana: I want others to be more understanding of me. That is frustrating, that people don’t know my true heart. It’s sometimes hurtful to be so misunderstood. I’m fiercely loyal as a type 4, and I usually expect that loyalty in return. When that loyalty is not reciprocated, I find myself mulling over what I did wrong. I will sometimes question another person’s motive for distancing themselves from me. Half the time, I am left feeling dissatisfied with their answers. Therefore, I am left to discerning others’ actions versus their words. Actions always speak louder to me than words. I just wish people were more direct. I think being direct solves things much more efficiently and keeps all the misunderstanding away. I don’t know, maybe people are scared or don’t know how to respond to my directness.
I also used to be told all the time, “You need to smile more!” I got so sick of hearing that! But I do honestly try to smile more now. I know that it makes me more approachable and communicates my friendliness with people.
Me: How did being a Type 4 help you in the Marines?
Briana: I joined the Marines because I wanted to be the best of the best. I wanted to get the best training and be in the best physical shape that I could be. I wanted to earn the title “Marine” and wear their uniforms, specifically the dress blues. I prepared myself physically and mentally months before boot camp started! I was determined! I obeyed all the rules. All the other recruits respected me. I earned awards, including the Molly Marine Award for Noteworthy Achievement presented by the Women Marine’s Association. This was an award all the other recruits had to vote on. I was put in a leadership position in boot camp. I was bound and determined to help my fellow female recruits graduate from boot camp so much that I was willing to carry them on my back to help them finish! I didn’t want anyone left behind. I have found that strength and determination still helps me get through the hard times in life.
Me: Any final thoughts?
Briana: Knowing my Type has helped me be more patient and understanding with others of all Types. I can relate to those of my own Type of Energy, and appreciate the gifts of the other Types of Energy. It has made a huge difference in my life!

I just love both of you ladies and am so glad to have you as my friends. It has been a wonderful time of personal reflection and acceptance using the Dressing Your Truth system. I finally feel like my voice matters and that I don’t have to shrink and be anyone’s doormat anymore. This is SO much more than a makeover. It’s a LIFE-over.

I love the way you expressed this, Olivia! Could not have said it better myself!

I’m definitely a type four and I also love black! Shopping still stresses me out, but I am much more confident making choices that I know I will actually wear now that I understand my type.
Kylie says
I’m a t4, too. It is really hard being the only type four in my family, but seeing this, it helped me see there are more people like me.
What is her secondary energy?
Melissa Howell says
Hi Kylie. I understand! It is sometimes hard being an introvert when you are surrounded by extroverts! I suggest you read the book “Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking” by Susan Cain. By the way, Briana’s secondary energy is Type 3.

Just wondering, I am a natural redhead and wonder, what colour should I use on my eyebrows? I’ve always gone for brown but that’s out now that I know I’m a type 4! Got any ideas? Thank you. And LOVE your transformation pictures.
Melissa Howell says
Hi Rachel! Great question! You actually can use brown on your eyebrows as long as it is a “cool” brown rather than a “warm” brown. The Dressing Your Truth online store sells eyebrow powder. I use the black/brown one. You may want to use something lighter, depending on the color of your hair. The powder is $15 but it lasts FOREVER. A little goes a really long way. Hope that helps! https://shop.liveyourtruth.com/makeup/brows.html?___store=type4

I’m curious about Briana’s hair color. I have natural red undertones but have been adding ash blonde highlights rather than adding more red because I was afraid it would end up warm. I’ve never seen a box color that says red and cool… how would I describe this to a stylist to make sure I keep cool in my coloring?
Melissa Howell says
Hi Ginger. There are definitely some cooler reds you can use! Sometimes you have to be careful because they come out with more purple undertones. If you tell your stylist you want a cool red, she should definitely be able to do that for you. Maybe search on Google or Pinterest for the exact color of red you like and then show it to her. Hope that helps!
