The year was 2000. The date was February 14th. Expectations were high. My fiancée was under obligation to do something awesome.
I went to his house where he had prepared a lovely meal of…tuna salad.
Are you kidding me? I thought. This was not my first indication of the lack of romantic prowess possessed by my husband-to-be. But seriously?
I pretended to be sweet and not show my disappointment at this lack-luster meal.
Then I ate the salad.
Shut the front door. It was amazing! I didn’t understand how something so simple could be so good!
All the salad has is lettuce, fresh peas, red onions, tuna, grated cheese, and mayonnaise. That is it.
I had never had this salad before, nor have I ever had it since outside of my home. That means it is a secret family recipe.
But I like you, so I am going to give you the secret family recipe. However, you can alter it to your heart’s content. I really just throw this thing together, so the amounts of the ingredients are just suggestions.
Now every Valentine’s Day, we have this salad to remind us of the night that we first fell in love–with this salad.
- 1/2 head of iceberg lettuce chopped
- 3/4 cup fresh or frozen peas no need to thaw or cook the peas
- 1/4 cup diced red onion
- 1 can of tuna drained
- 1 cup grated cheddar cheese
- 1/2 cup mayonnaise
- Put all the ingredients except the mayonnaise into a large bowl and toss until well incorporated.
- Fold in the mayonnaise.
- Chill until ready to eat.

Yummy! Too bad my husband won’t eat some of the ingredients. It will have to be my special dish!

“Ghetto college fair?” Haha I’m not trying to be PC… BUT that is the most annoying and pretentious comment. Not everyone can afford Whole Foods fresh produce. While a potential great recipe, it would be really nice if you would be a little more aware of your word usage

Just removed the phrase. I certainly could not afford Whole Foods in college and I did not mean to insult anyone.

I know! It’s deceptively simple, but uncommonly delicious!
