If you are a woman, chances are that lurking at the back of your closet are old bridesmaid dresses with poofy sleeves. (That’s what is at the back of my closet, since I was a bridesmaid during the 90s).
I bet you also have other things you will never use again stuffed in your closet or other places. Things like graduation gowns, sports uniforms, swimsuits, winter wear, etc.
How do you decide which to get rid of and which to keep?
If you have read The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, you will know that there is a clear guideline to help us make this decision. It is to take each item in our hands and ask ourselves:
Does this spark joy?
Maybe that sounds weird to you, but think about it for a minute. Is there any point to keeping things that we don’t actually love? Why would we use our closets as a place to store old, unwanted clothing? Let’s free up some space so we can make room for things that we do actually love!
Am I going to keep my graduation gown from high school? No I am not.
Am I going to keep my bridesmaid dresses from two of my best friends’ weddings? You bet I am! Yes, they were from the early nineties. Yes, they both have huge floral designs. One of them was made out of curtain material, and the other has poofy sleeves that rival the tops of chef’s hats. Do these things bring me joy? Yes, they do. And if my daughters ever go to a “Flashback Dance,” they will be covered!
