Welcome!
I’m so glad you found this post! If you are looking for a way to get your closet under control and make it beautiful and functional, you have come to the right place!
If you have read The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, you know how amazing the organizing techniques are! Instead of focusing on what we don’t like, we focus on what we do like! I love the positive energy that comes from viewing our possessions this way!
At the beginning of book, the author (Marie Kondo) suggests that by decluttering and organizing our homes in a certain order, we will have more success. The category she suggests starting with is our clothes.
This post will teach you how to choose and store your hanging items such as:
- Dresses
- Jackets
- Sweaters
- Hoodies
- Blazers
- Coats.
Don’t worry about your wedding dress or bridesmaid dresses or your graduation gown or anything that would fit into a “special event” category.
If you have other things that are hanging that should be in drawers, please fold them nicely and put them away in your drawers. (You can find the post about folding your pants here, and the post about folding your tops here). If you are the kind of person who hangs ALL of their clothes, please read pages 71 and 72 in the book The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up.
This week, I’ll be getting rid of most of my dresses, blazers, and several coats that are too small (that I foolishly purchased from a Chinese website). It will be great not to have them hanging in my closet any more, reminding me of the distress I suffered trying to get a refund from the Chinese website for not delivering the size I actually ordered. (This could be a whole other post on its own, but I don’t want to relive the horror of my experience, which ultimately ended in failure to retrieve my funds).
These are my dresses, coats, and blazers spread out on my bed. That cute blue one and black and white one in the foreground are my two failed attempts at getting Chinese clothes to fit. They were so cute, too! Boo 🙁
Here is my closet after I went through it. I kept only three dresses (but I have lots of skirts, so I feel fine about that). I must confess that this picture does not show the back of my closet where my “special event” clothing is hanging, as well as the clothing I am saving for my girls. But this does represent all I have kept for myself otherwise.
