If you have read The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up (the book that inspired this course), you know that the criterion by which you must judge all your possessions is this: Does it bring me joy? This is the “magic question” not only for cleaning and organizing our clothes, but our whole home. As I have used this question throughout my whole home, I have gotten rid of almost HALF of the things I own and created so much more organized space!
Most of us can easily identify which clothes we love, which are just eh, and which we can’t stand. Let’s try the magic question with our skirts first, and then learn the best way to store them. Here’s what you do:
- Take all your skirts out of your closet and spread them on your bed or the floor. Don’t miss the skirts in the laundry. Get them all!
- Hold each one in your hands and pay attention to your feelings. Do you love it, or not? DO NOT THINK TOO MUCH! Do not say to yourself, “Well, I used to love this, but I don’t fit into it any more.” Or, “My mother-in-law gave this to me and she would feel bad if I got rid of it.” Or, “Do I really like this? Hmm. I’m not sure.” If you are saying any of these things, get rid of it. These are clear indicators that the items do not bring you joy (and your mother-in-law will never know).
- Put all your “no joy” skirts into a bag to donate. Take the bag down to your car or put it with other donation items so you can get rid of them as soon as possible.
- Hang the remaining skirts up in your closet. You can either hang them by color, or by length.
Here is a picture of my skirts in my closet before doing this challenge. There are several falling off the shelf above the hangers, and many more around the corner that you can’t see.
Here they are spread out on my bed. I had over 30 skirts.
When I finished, I had 14. I had cut the number in half. And guess what? I’m not sad, because I love all of them!
To learn how to fold your pants, just watch the video!
There you have it! Super easy and FUN! It is amazing how much joy you have when you see your drawers looking so organized and pretty!
