Look at this linen closet. It is an abomination. Ragged and disintegrating towels brazenly mingling with rumpled sheets. Pillowcases that have disappeared into the abyss, never to be seen again. Washcloths forlornly scattered with no contact with their fellow washcloths. My linens are depressed. Can you blame them? They are in an awful state!
It is time to do something about this, my friends. In The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up (the book upon which this challenge is based), the criterion for deciding which items to keep and which items to discard is to ask yourself, “Does this spark joy?” I’m going to say that I really did not think about the “joy” that my sheets and towels brought me. I thought more about which sheets and towels annoyed me and then got rid of them.
Here are the things that annoy me about sheets and towels:
- Towels that are fraying around the edges and leave long stringy things that stick to your legs when you get out of the shower.
- Sheets that are so thin (due to overuse or a very low thread count) that you can see through them.
- Sheets that cause an unnatural amount of static and constantly slide off the bed.
I immediately discarded any items that fit into these three categories.
When I change the sheets on the beds, I always seem to have a hard time finding pillow cases. I was sure that we hardly had any. Until I went through the linen closet and discovered a hidden colony. “Eureka!” I exclaimed. (Not really. I don’t say “eureka!”) Nevertheless, I was surprised and heartened to find that I had so many pillow cases. I also found two sets of twin sheets that I didn’t know we had and several other items that made me feel a lot better about our ability to provide bedding for ourselves and possible guests.
Look at my linen closet now. Isn’t it beautiful? I put all the queen and full sheet sets on the top shelf, all the twin sets and pillow cases on the middle shelf, and all the towels on the bottom shelf. Now when I put things away, they will always go in these spots so that my linen closet will stay clean and organized.

Lol Melissa you’re hilarious! So relatable. My linen closet could definitely use an overhaul. Sounds like I need to read that book too!
Courtney, so glad you liked the post! I looked at your blog, too, and I think it is so great! Clean, inviting design and well-organized! (I also love that you are a writer, so I won’t find run-on sentences or misspelled words! I’m a little bit of a freak when it comes to that kind of stuff!) Thanks again for stopping by and commenting!
Thanks so much Melissa!! I’m sure I’ll be back a lot for more much-needed organizing advice, so glad to have found your blog! My husband will be too 😉 (Love the fun colors btw!)
Thanks Courtney! I just saw that you have three girls under age 7! I also have three girls, and at one point, they were all under age 7 🙂 Have a great day!
